Rudolph: Since the early 1990's Rudolph has been creating instruments using 'found objects', most of the 'metalophone' variety. Here is a partial list of invented / altered / created found object instruments in Rudolph's vast collection: Liquid Propane tanks, or "Propanophones" - various sizes - 52 and counting. The smallest being "Smogophones" which are tanks once used for California smog checks. Rudolph cuts and tunes these tanks, and many sound very similar to Gamelan instruments. The largest is just over 5 feet long and weighs 120 pounds Tuned Saw Blades - two sets of 12 blades each, mounted on resonating boxes Aluminum Slit Plate - similar to a wooden 'slit drum', an aluminum stock piece with tuned tongues cut into it Artillery Shells - various sizes from 40mm to 80mm, cut and tuned to different pitches Army Oxygen tanks - a great find near Roswell, NM Springs - large, small, from cars, trucks, assembly lines - used alone or as sound alteration on another instrument by attaching them to it Metalophone rack: built in June of 2008, this 8-foot high, multi-level Speed Rail rack can be configured to fit numerous stage sizes and can hold up to 50 different found object metalophones. Brake Drums Motorcycle gears Automotive transmission parts Aluminum disks - tuned Shakers using various vessels and 'ingredients' inside - gravel, metal hardware, dried beans, beads, water with aquarium rocks, etc... "Thunder Sheets" - metal stock of different types, brass, stainless steel, aluminum, etc... Microtonal Aluminum bars - tuned to 1/4 steps De-tuned toy organ Various metal vents from Home Depot - altered with other metals attached - used both as an instrument and activator Aluminum baseball bats - cut and tuned, used as both an instrument and activator - small t-ball bats for kids Large metal bolts drilled and suspended with cord - "hurricane chimes" Nerf-style foam footballs compressed to 1/10th their size with twine and placed on the end of a large bamboo tube - an excellent gong mallet Dowels with small metals attached to ends - activator The CLEAN ROOM SUITS... - design and alteration by Paul H.
